Enhancement Opportunities
Reminder from previous bulletin: The Robinson Library at Newcastle University is offering reference facilities to Sixth Form students during quiet times of the academic year. Students can access the Library’s wide range of information resources, as well as use the Library’s study space and the Learning Lounge. Access is available during staffed opening hours except for University exam periods. This opportunity could be of great use to students wanting to research Extended Projects over the summer holidays. To apply, students should print off a Sixth Form Access Form from the University Library website at www.ncl.ac.uk/library/accessform.pdf, and the completed form should be taken to the Robinson Library reception.

Students should note that Project Trust run mandatory selection courses for prospective gap year students wishing to go on volunteering projects with them in 2011. There are dates for selection courses in the summer holidays, towards the end of August, and there are also some in the Autumn term, but be aware that they book up very quickly (for instance, there is currently a very limited amount of places left for the August selection courses). For more information, and to apply for a selection course, go to http://www.projecttrust.org.uk/index.php

For more information, and to apply to be a volunteer, see http://www.morethanenglish.com/anglos/index.asp

PARTNERS - 6th Form Bulletin

Sixth Form Bulletin from
Aimhigher Student Advocate at Prudhoe HS, Jamie Dodd 10/12/09

As many of you may already know, here at Prudhoe we are part of the Newcastle University's PARTNERS scheme, a scheme that can put you in a great position to study at one of the UK's top universities. Newcastle University are always aiming to bring in the best and brightest students in the region, regardless of their background, and to provide the opportunity and support to those of you thinking about university, that’s why they started PARTNERS.

One of the really great aspects of being at a PARTNERS school is that they run events throughout the year that give students in the region, like yourself, the opportunity to find out first hand what it is like to go to university and offer you the chance to get a taste of what courses you might be interested in. For those in Year 12 the University are running the following events in March next year:
? 8 March 2010 – Medicine/Dentistry Student Shadowing allows you to spend the day with a medicine/dentistry student, giving you the opportunity to find out more about the course as well as seeing their accommodation and what they get up to in their spare time.
? 9-12 March 2010 – Student Shadowing allows you to find out more about the wide range of different degree programmes offered at Newcastle University. On the day, you will go with current undergraduate students to attend a lecture, visit the University facilities, and take part in a question-and-answer session.

This is a really great opportunity for those in Year 12 who are thinking about university but want a better idea of what they might want to do. So if you are interested let your tutor know as soon as possible as places can fill up fast.

Applying through PARTNERS

As a student at a PARTNERS affiliated school some of you may be eligible for support with your application through the Guaranteed Offer Scheme or the PARTNERS Programme Supported Entry Route. These schemes are only available to students in the local area who want to go to Newcastle University and they have proved to be very popular with many of last years’ applicants. For more information about applying through PARTNERS there is information available in the Sixth Form Study Area or visit www.ncl.ac.uk/partners.
